By Deborah O’Banion-Backlink Engines REVIEW

Good backlink strategies require more than just having backlinks to your site. Know the SEO rules for backlinks.

Backlinks can make or break websites, blogs, and internet articles. Backlinks are URL links on the internet that take people from the site they are on to another site. Without them, people might chance upon a site or article, but they would not necessarily be driven to it. However, a good backlink also helps to move a link closer to the top of the search engines so that people will find a site easier. Backlinks are the bread and butter of internet marketing.

Not all backlinks are created equal, though. Some can be useless if they do not attract people back to a particular site. Some could even hurt search engine ranking. So how do people know if a backlink is good or not? Find out the basics of backlinking. Find out what makes them good and be on the way to getting the best backlinks and maximizing traffic.

The Type and Presentation of the Backlink Matters

Use “do follow” links. Backlinks are either “do follow” or “no follow.” No follow links are good but will not help in search results. There are a couple ways to tell if a link is “do follow” or “no follow.” Firefox has a “NoDoFollow” add on that highlights “do follow” links. Also, clicking on View and Source will show the page code to see if “no follow” is written in the code after the link.

One-way backlinks are better then two-way backlinks. Links could be traded with someone else (by putting links on each others pages); however, those two way links do not carry as much weight with search engines. They can certainly help to bring in traffic, but links on related sites or articles that go one direction will carry more weight.

Always hide the backlink. These are referred to “anchor links” or “anchor text.” The reader will see related text to click on instead of the link; however, the text is just hiding the link. To hide the link, look for a chain symbol. Usually, the chain is on a globe symbol. Type in the text and highlight it. Next, click on the chain. A box will pop up to put the URL in.

Use the keywords as the text when using anchor links. The text will effectively describe where the reader is going. Never hide a link with text such as “click here.” Using text that closely matches the key words in the title and article will help the search ranking of the article the URL is pointing to.

The Location of the Backlink Matters

Never use link farms. Link farms are sites that post tons of unrelated links. Some even charge. The problem is that the search engines are pretty smart. They can tell if a site is a link farm when they scan it. A link farm can actually hurt your link in the search engine results. Also, avoid overly spammy sites.

Place links on pages with a good Google ranking. Google ranks sites from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best. The rating is a reflection of the size and importance of the site. Few sites have a 10. That does not mean that one should not put a link on a site that is not rated yet or on a site with a low rating. However, try to get a couple of links on sites that have a rating of at least a 5 or more.

Use a variety of sites for backlinks. Using a variety of sites will help in search engine optimization. For example social bookmarking sites, forums, other online articles and blogs are all different types of sites that are fairly easy to use to backlinks. Even better is having a link on a news story or on a well ranked website with related content.

Getting Great Backlinks

Backlinks can really help drive traffic to online information. They can drive people directly to a website or article and they can also be a significant source of help in search engine results. Knowing the right way to use backlinks and how to place them effectively is essential, though, in getting the right results.
